RETIRED JURIST TAKEN BY DEATHJudge Isaac M. Meekins Dies At Home After Long IllnessELIZABETH CITY, Nov. *1—(JP) -Isaac M. Meekins, 71, retired federal court judge of the Eaftern Carolina district and one-time Republican candidate for governor, died about noon Thursday at his home here.Judge Meekins’ death followed a long period of declining health.Appointed to tne federal bench by President Coolidge in 1925, he served in that post for 20 years, retiring in February, 1945. The judge figured prominently in the trial of a number of important casei during his career as a Juriat md once, after presiding over a New York Federal docket of whiskey cases during the prohibition ers. ht drew the editorial praise of New York newspaper?,.His name was projected into the Supreme court reorganization fight during the Roosevelt adminis-tntion when he took issue with federal court critics, denying charges that the courts were behind on their dockets.Wake GraduateA graduate of Wake Foreit college. Mrs. J. J. Combs of Raleigh. Mrs. 0. F. Gilbert of Elizabeth City and Mrs. S. J. Deviney, Jr.. j! Raleigh; and one son, W. C. Meekins of Asheville.The family has requested that no Rowers be sent for the funeral.
