Atherton, an English teacher and poet who was the first president of Pitzer College as it created an innovative program of self-directed study, died Oct. 30. He was 85.A poet and specialist in Victorian literature, Atherton joined the faculty atClaremont Men’s College,now Claremont McKenna, in 1949 and was its dean. He leftto start the new Pitzer College for women opening in 1963 and served as its president until 1970. Under Atherton’s tenure, Pitzer — now acoed campus and the newestof the Claremont Collegesconstructed its physical campus and grew from an initial 150 students to 650 and from13 faculty members to 50.
