* Death of Bishop Norton, D.D.The Grim Reaper is no inspector of persons—rich and poor, Jew and G« mile—all have to respond to the la«t great call. Thus it is our painful duty to record the rather unexpected death of Right Rev. John Henry Norton, D.D., Bishop of Port Augusta, which sad event took place yesterday morning at his residence, Peterborough. His Lordship bad not been well for a few days, but it was not for a moment anticipated that his end was so near. On Saturday he was taken sei iously 111, and despite every attention of his medical advisor, Dr Goode, he passed peacefully away at 8 30 a.m. yesterday. The last rites of the church were administered by Monsig Mulcahy, V.G., and Father Ryan. The deceased Bishop, who was in his 68th year, was bom at Ballarat, Victoria. He made his preliminary studies at the local Christian Brothers Schools, and read his classics and philosophy at Manly Rcclesiatic College. From there he went to Ireland and began his theological course in the famous college St. Kie nan’s, Kilkenny. After two years in the Green Isle he left for the Propaganda College in Rome,| where he achieved the prond distinction of D.D. Here he was | ordained priest, and returned on a I holiday to relatives in County I Waterford, Ireland. Close on forty i years ago he returned to his native , land (Australia), of which he | always felt so proud. His first . station was at West Terrace, Ade-; laide. Here he endeared himself to . j the hearts of bis people, and was p. 1 general favorite with his brother ; priests and the late Bishop Reynolds. Within twelve months he was sent ’ ! in charge of Petersburg parish and , has since presided over its spiritual ! destinies. About twenty-eight years 1 ago he was appointed Vicar-General of the diocese by the late Bishop Maher, who died 20th December, I'05. When the diocesan priests ' met some weeks after Dr Maher's• death to select a new Bishop their eboi:e fell on the Vicar-General,, who by Apostolic Brief of Pope I ; Pius X was cousecrated at St. Francis’ Cathedral, Adelaide, on 9th December, 1906. His Eminence, , ( the late Cardinal Moran, travelled from Sydney for the ceremony. To do justice to all that he accomplished ] for the advancement of religion l during the past sixteen years would I be a task of such magnitude that we will not attempt it The number | of churches, schools, convents, ‘ i presbyteries, and the Bishop’s House i erected by him show a little of his apostolic zeal. In the midst of his r ; episcopal labors his virtues shine j forth with splendour, his unaffected piety, his boundless charity, and e above all that sweetness of disposi-f tion which made him so lovable and* i approachable. He had his own a 1 well matured views on all questions 1 of National interest, but he was - broad-minded and tolerant of the j opinions of others. His body nowlies in state at St. Anacletus church, Peterborough. The final obsequies take place to-morrow morning at 9 o’clock. His Grace, Archbishop Spence, D D . Adelaide, will preside at the celc'-.atiou of solemn office and Pontitieial Requiem Mass. An account of his funeral will appear in our next issue. Meanwhile, we tender his priests and people our profound sympathy.Tko Hoodi rrftrl am
