Professor Covcia. joined the staff of the University College of the West Indies in 1950 as a lecturer in the Department of History She was promoted to the post of Senior Lectur er in 1958 and in March 1961 was made a professor in West Indian history, becoming the first West Indian to be appoimed to this post and also the first and only worn an professor at the U.W I.At the time of her death. Professor Goveia was also the longest serving West Indian professor in the university.An outstanding scholar who was well kdown in academic circles. Professor Goveia was educated at St Joseph’s High , School inGoveiaGuyana, the University College of London and tfie Institute of Historical Research, London University.W.l. historyAs a member of the Department of History. Professor Goveia was primarily responsible for devising and teaching a course in West Indian history for the General and Honours degree programme.In co'operation with members of the library staff, she also bui^t up what was described as a remarkable collection of West Indian material suitable for research and teaching purposes.Professor Goveia was an internationally acclaimed historian on the Wot Indies. Her two most important publications were The Historiography. of the West Indies and Slave Society in the Led-, ward Islands at the end of the Eighteenth Century.
