John Chewka, age 64 years of The Shell Valley District, passed away suddenly Friday, June 10, 1988 at Roblin District Health Centre.John was born Saturday, February 2,1924, a son of Dennis and Lena Chewka (nee Gabor). He was bom at his parents farmand received his education at Shell Valley School. Following his education John worked in the district as a farm labourer.John served his country in the Second World War and served with the Search Light Unit. Upon his discharge from the Armed Forces, John returned to Shell Valley for awhile and then went mining at Snow Lake and Esterhazy and then in 1961 he went to work for Mr. Gamey, a farmer in the Strathclair District. In 1965 John returned to Shell Valley to farm. John was a steward of the land and liked to be close to the soil, and he really enjoyed being outdoors. He treasured the farm life, and always )iad time for his church. John enjoyed singing in the church choir. John was always there for his family, and always welcomed friends and strangers into his home.Surviving to mourn his death and cherish many fond memories are; his beloved wife, Shirley of Shell Valley; father, Dennis Chewka of Roblin; 2 sons, James and Shelly Chewka of Winnipeg, Robert Chewka of Shell Valley; 2 daughters, Diane and Kevin Scott of Victoria, Donna and James McAstocker of Quesnel, B.C.; 2 grand-children, Tara and Curtis McAstocker of Quesnel, B.C.; 3 brothers, Harry and Pat Chewka of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, Martin Chewka of Haddisville, Man., Edward and Phyllis Chewka of Hinton, Alta.; 5sisters, Elsie and Earl Sanders of Hinton, Alta., Carol Chewka of Saskatoon, SK, Sylvia and Gordon Tkatchuk of Vancouver, BC, Albina and Walter Starr of Vancouver, B.C., Evelyn and John Gibson of Vancouver, B.C., as well as 1 brother-in-law, Eric Walker of Victoria, B.C., numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.John was pre-deceased by his mother, Lena Chewka in 1947, sister, Martha Walker in 1983, an infant sister Mary Chewka and infant brothers Nick and William Chewka.Prayer Services were held from Roblin Memorial Chapel, Monday, June 13, 1988 at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Nickolae Marioncu officiating.Funeral Services were held from St. John The Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church, Shell Valley, Manitoba,Tuesday, June 14, 1988 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Nickolae Marioncu officiating, assisted by the Romanian Orthodox Choir.Cross Bearers, Banner Bearers, and Candle Bearer were: Nick and Albert Holopina, Larry and Michael Prokopetz, Johnny Germain. Casket Bearers were: Bill Eckert, Gerald Zimmer, Mervin Cherowka, Brian Prokopetz, Gary Anderson, Leonard Funk.Following interment services at St. John Parish Cemetery, a memorial dinner reception was held at Shell Valley Hall.The Chewka family have requested, if friends so desire, memorial donations in memory of John, may be made to St. John The Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church, c/o Nick Holopina, Gen. Del., Roblin, MB., R0L1P0.Roblin Memorial Chapel Ltd. entrusted with funeral arrangements.
