Many people in New Mexico are mourning the death of Benjamin F. “Uncle Ben” Pankey, state commissioner of public lands.Mr. Pankey through his long career in public life in New Mexico and through his private dealings as an extensive cattle rancher had endeared himself to thousands of people in the state. He was a genial person, possessed of intimate kindliness, supplanted by a droll wit and sense of humor that made friends, which he held by his honesty.Mr. Pankey attained wealth in the state to have it wiped out in the years of depression in the cattle industry in the state, but he faced the situation courageously and he never was more highly esteemed than in the closing days of his life, although his time of affluence had passed.Such could not have been, had he not throughout his life maintained his rigid honesty, geniality and kindly regard for his fellow man.Mr. Pankey as a public servant tried to do what he thought was the right thing. He was conscientious in office, which at. toned for any mistakes he may have made. The state has lost a good citizen and faithful public servant.
