Walter Curtis CarpenterWalter and Dorothy Together AgainAge 82, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, at New Dawn Retirement Community in Dover, Ohio, following an extended illness. Bom on June 26,1929, in Dennison, Ohio, Walter was the second oldest of six children bom to the late James M. and Helen M. (Rector) Carpenter. In 1947, Walter graduated from Uhrichsville High School, where he was the class Valedictorian and received a scholarship to Capitol University. He remained on the family farm helping his father instead of choosing to attend college. Hewas employed at the U.S. Postal service for 31 years, until his retirement in 1989- Walter also was a cab driver and worked at the Dennison Clay Plant. On July 2, 1948, at Covington, Ky., Walter and Dorothy (Hite) Carpenter eloped and remained married over 50 years until her death in December 2005. Walter is also preceded in death by his brother, Fred, and a sister, June. Walter was a 50-plus year member of the First United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville. He taught Admore Sunday School class for 40 years (his current pastor calls him a saint for this job), he sang in the choir until he suffered a stroke, he served on the board of trustees and helped cook and serve meals in theFellowship Hall until his health failed. Walter was a member of the Knights of Pythias where he served as chancellor commander. He formed a travel group and traveled to Hawaii for 25 years after taking his bride there on their 25th wedding anniversary.Walter is survived by his daughter, Gloria (George) Dry-den of Cuyahoga Falls; his son, Marc (Denise) Carpenter of North Canton; his grandchildren, TVavis (Paula) Dryden,Joelle (Lance) Grimsley, Chad (Erica) Dryden, Abby (Sean) Jones and Amelia and Muriel Carpenter; his great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Oliver, Henry and Ernest Dryden, Michael Fisher, Sebastian and Olivia Grimsley and Magnolia Dryden; his brother, Donald (Nancy) Carpenter of Dover; his sisters, Evelyn Martin of Dover and Jean Carpenter of Uhrichsville; and his special friend, Norma Gonzales of Dennison.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Uhrich-Hos-tettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville. Funeral services for Walter will be on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 11 a.m., in the First United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville, with the Rev. John Clark and Rev. Steve Bailey officiating.
