G. Louis ‘Lou’ HellerAug. 25. 1927 July 9. 2015G. Louis “Lou” Heller, 87, passed away Thursday at The Baptist Home,Rhinebeek,N Y. He had moved to Rhinebeek in 2009 from Altoona, where he had lived his entire life.He was horn in Altoona, son of George H. and Betty F. (Galbraith) Heller. He married Helen E. Hoover on May 2,1953, in Altoona.Surviving are his wife and five children: .Jan ( Heller, Ph.D., and wife, Linda, of Poulsbo, Wash., and their daughter, Abigail; Heidi Washington and hus band, Shane, of Naples,Fla.; Holly Stippa and hus band, Alan, of Rhinebeek, N.Y., and their children, Yuri, M.I)., Nigel, M.D., and Anton; Sallie Malafy and husband,Joseph,of Red Hook, N.Y., and their children, Samuel and Hannah; and Noel Dolby and hus band, John, of Tucson,Ariz., and their children, Alyssa and Aidan.He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria HellerKurtz.Lou graduated fromAltoona High School in 1945 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1950 and a master’s degree in 1952. Heserved in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952-55. He worked as a city and regional planner in Pennsylvania, and at the end of his career in Washington,D.C., for the federal government. In 1969, he started a career as a landscape contractor and opened Mount Etna Nurseries in Williamsburg.For 36 years, Lou also taught church history at the Altoona Bible Institute and served on the board of trustees for the institute and on the Williamsburg School Board. While living in Altoona, he was an active member of First Baptist Church of Altoona and had been a member of the Clinton Alliance Church since moving to Rhinebeek in 2009.Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday,July 12, 2015, at Dapson-Chestney Funeral Homo. 51 W. Market St., Rhine-beck, N.Y., followed by a service of remembrance at 7 p.m., Pastor Thomas Hartley officiating.
