Ida Barron dies at 75Newspaper columnist and historian Ida Barron died Tuesday, July 8, onher 75th birthday.Mrs. Barron died at her Key West home following a long battle withcancer.Ida Woodward Barron was born in Vanndale, Arkansas, a small community in northeastern Arkansas that had been named after Mrs Barron's maternal grandparents At an early age, she studied piano and taught herself to play her brother Vann’s coronet, a fact that later influenced her as a young woman to pursue a music career with an all girl band. The band was, in fact, how Mrs. Barron first came to Key West in 1038.Prior to that, Mrs Barron attended Gallowav College in Searcy,Arkansas. When her lather was named dean of a junior college connected with Atlanta, Ga.’s EmoryUniversity, Mrs. Barron transferred to Wesleyan College in Macon Ga. where she received her degreeFollowing graduation, Ida Barron went to work as a social worker with the Federal Emergency Belief Association. It was 1932, during the depths of the depression, and Mrs. Barron was one of the few young college graduates who was lucky enough to fine workHer three years of social work were followed by work in a music store in Atlanta It was here that the leader of a 14 girl bank came in to inquire if anyone knew a girl who could play trumpet. The stores owner, over Ida’s protests, quickly volunteered her for the job.But it was then that Ida Barrondiscovered she loved playing with the band. She made two very specialfriends with the band, VirginiaKenan, whom she had met whileworking as a social worker; andDolice Scott, native of Illinois, andlater the wife of George Curry of KeyWittWhen the 14-girl band later disbanded, Ida Barron and her two special friends, and another girl who played the marimba, formed a new group, “The Four Girls of Note.” It was this group that came to Key West to play lr) 19j»Ida Barron fell in love with the island from the moment she arrived.
