From 1896 to 1T00 he was Minister of Railways and Public Works in Sir John Forrest’s Ministry, and was Acting-Premier of the Western State in 1900. Wien the 'Lewke Ministry was in office, the late gentleman was Leader of the Opposition. Two years ago a paralytic stroke seizure eompelled his retirement from politics, and -he was -succeeded in th«* representation of the Katanning district in the Assembly by his brother. Mr. Arnold E. Piesse. The thriving Great Southern Railway (Albany-Perth) town of Katanning was practically made by the late Mr. Pieaae’s enterprise. He there established the immense rolleT flour-mill bu-sinee* which bears his name, and the town became the chief agricultural produce mart of the Great Southern district, the land around which is exceptionally fertile and productive. The Westralian press vary their references to the town by styling it Piease-ville. and for long enough the late honorable gentleman has been written of a* “the King of Katanning.”
