Kryczka dead.•*CALGARY (CP) — Justice Joe Kryczka, a chief negotiator of the 1972 Canada-Soviet hockey series, died on the weekend after a lengthy battle with cancer. lie was 55.Most of the credit for the eight-game, 1972 hockey summit that forced Canada to reevaluate its national game went to Alan Kagleson, president of the NHL Players’ Association. Rut Kryczka, Charles Hay and Lou Lafaive completed most of the negotiations before Kagleson arrived.The series paved the way for many events, including the Canada Cup hockey tournament. It also led to the forma tion of Hockey Canada and a full-time national team.Known as ‘.Justice Joe” to his friends, Kryczka also served on the board of directors of the Calgary Olympic Development Association. He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in October.He was appointed to Calgary’s Court of Queen's Bench in 1980.
