MAi. MH. MARSHALL STANLEY ROTH,90, a former chief of staff at NORAD and a fighter aircraft test pilot, died Jan. 3,1986, In Colorado Springs*.A memorial service at the Air Force Academy Chapel will be announced in April. Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., is handling arrangements.Maj. Gen. Roth was bom April 18,1904, in Chicago to Edward B. and Martha (Stevens) Roth.He was married Sept, 18,1931, in Chicago to Martha Rathje, who survives.He also is survived by two sons, William E. of Breckenridge, Mo., and Robert S. of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Palmer.He had lived in Colorado Springs since 1968.Maj. Gen. Roth graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1929. Upon completing pilot training, he flew P-28 fighters at March Air Force Base, Calif., and then became a flight instructor at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.His work included flight tests of prototype flying wings and the first flight by a military pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt.He was stationed in Colorado Springs from 1953 to 1957 and was the deputy chief of staff/material and later the chief of staff at NORAD. During this time, he was an adviser to the group that helped select Colorado Springs as the location for the Air Force Academy.After his retirement from the military, he became vice president of Richard Wilcox Manufacturing Co. in Aurora, 111.He was awarded the Legion of Merit and other honors.He was an avid golfer and a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club and Kissing Camels Golf Club.Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 501 S.
