Heeducated at Wesleyan Academy, St. j John's, and later at Windsor College. cNora Scotia. At the age of twenty t he was articled to the late A. O. Hay- j r ward, Q.C., admitted as Solicitor inj f 1882, and as Barrister in 1883. In T 1889, at the age of 32, Mr. Clift c entered public life and was returned a by the district of Port de Grave as j jIts representative. Two years later Sir William Whiteway nominated Mr. Clift as Speaker. In 1900 he joined th* Ttt Hon. Sir Robert Bond as aJcolleague in Notre Dame Bay, and was returned triumphantly. This district he represented for fifteen years, 1900-1904, and 1908-1919. For many years he was a member of the Bond Executive and later of the National Govern- j ment, led by the Rt. Hon. Sir W. F. Lloyd. From 1904 to 1909 and from 1917 to 1919 he held the portfolio of Mines and Agriculture. In 1902 Mr. Clift became King’s Counsellor, and during recent years has been practising in partnership with E. S. Pin- i sent, under the firm name of Clift and iPinsent jIn Masonic circles the passing of Mr. Clift will be keenly felt. Fortyyears ago he was initiated in St. i John’s Lodge, No. 579. Four years later he became Worshipful Master, an ^ honor that is rarely attained under seven or eight years of sCTVice. Hewas re-elected in 1888 and again in 1891. Two years later he was appointed District* Grand Secretary by thelafo Hnn sir William Vallance Whiteway, the then District Grand Master, an office which he held until 1909, when he received from H.R.H. theDuke of Connaught, the appointmentof District Grand Master, into whichoffice he was installed in May 1909, and which he occupied when the call came. During his term as District Grand Master the membership of theDistrict has doubled. Masonic Brethren of the Second Con-J tingent In 1919 Mr. Clift attended : the Peace Celebration of the United Grand Lodge of England in London. Ill health has prevented his attendance at Masonic functions since June 1921; his last visit being for the purpose of installing the W.M. of Avalon Lodge, No. 776.Mr. Clift was a prominent official of the S.U.F., having been both Grand Secretary and Grand Master. He wasfor many years Vice-President, and later President, of the City Club. Until quite recently he was actively engaged in the work of the Colonial and Continental Church Society, and also the Diocesan Synod Executive.In 1S91 Mr. Clift was married to Miss Agnes Paterson, daughter of the late John Paterson, Esq.* of Harbor i Grace. She, with one daughter, wife of Capt. Campbell, M.C., of Scotland, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Knivht. are left to mourn their great loss. His ' two sons predeceased him, Lieut. Cecil K. Clift paid the Supreme Sacrifice in France on October 12th, 1916. Capt. John Clift, M.C., who served with theaftfrwardsijoined the Newfoundland Regiment died shortly after coming home. Other relatives surviving are two brothers: Arthur in Montreal, and Stanley in Chicago; and a sister, Mrs. James Rendell, Bermuda. Mr. Clift received ‘ the order o( C.B.E., for Ms untiling services as Vice-President of the New-flSundland Patriotic Association..
