BARKER DIESMaywood Man, Mason, WasProminent Citizen and Well Known Here—Leader in Civic AffairsIIaJohn William Barker, well known- in Oak Park and River Forest, died at his home, SOI North Fifth avenue, Maywood, Friday of last week, after a long illness. He was born at Appleton Le-Yorkshire, England, September 17, 1864, the son of William and JaneBarker. At the age of 19 years he came to Illinois. He was married to Miss Lucjr 1 .Hunting of London, England, on De-j cember 4, 1889. He built a home onSixteenth avenue, Melrose Park, and here four children were born to them, Claribel, Sylvia, Ruby and Charles Munt-ing. In 1906 they moved to their pres-| cnt home.Mr. Barker served on the Melrose Park board at various times as treasurer and trustee. He was a Mason for nearlytwenty-eight years and with D. R. Robinson helped to institute Maywood Lodge, No. 869, A. F. A. M., and wasits second worthy master. He was also charter member of Maywood Chapter, No. 234, R. A. M., Oak Park Council R. S. M., Siloam Commandery, No. 54, K. T., Oriental Consistory, andthe Shrine, Medinah Temple.He with Arthur Jones founded Moss Rose Lodge, No. 347, Order Sons of St. George, and was much interested in British-American activities. He was also a member of the Royal League and theLoval Americans.•* _Mr. Barker has been engaged in thecontracting business for about thirtyyears, and for several years past he and his son, Charles, have carried it on together as John W. Barker Son.During the world war he served as a captain in the American Protective League. He was a loyal citizen and wasalways interested in everything for thegood of the community. He workedhard to establish the Proviso township high school, and was on the board for seven years as trustee and president.Mr. Barker loved his home and family,- and had a host of relatives andfriends who loved and respected him, and his loss will be greatly felt in this community. During his long sickness his many friends called on him constantly and kept him supplied with dainties and his room wras a bower of flowers. The floral tributes at his death were numerous and beautiful, and showed the love I which his relatives and friends bore him. i Besides his family, he leaves three sisters, Mrs. William Nesfield of Little Hills Green Farm, Yorkshire, England, Mrs. Thomas Boddy and Mrs. Peter Bakerjof Maywood, and four brothers, Edward A., of Louisville, Ky.; George of Maywood, Fred of Oak Park, and Harry of| Maywood.Funeral services -were held at the house and the Church of the Holy Communion, of which Mr. Barker was a mem-l her, on Monday afternoon, where his many friends came to pay their last re spects to him.The pallbearers were Walter Plum mer, Sr., P. H. McCarthy, William Hayes, W. W. Wilkinson, Charles Mauch and Carl De Pue.Interment was in the family lot aForest Home cemetery. C. J. R.I
