BLACK: Helen Evelyn Black (Baxter) (nee Smithard), passed away peacefully at the Bayside Personal Care Home on December 2, 2005. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 to celebrateher life. Helen was born in Miniota, Manitoba on January 4, 1919. She attended school in Bradwardine, Manitoba and continued on to graduate as a nurse from the Brandon Mental Hospital. Helen spent a number of years at the Ninette Sanitarium as both a patient and a nurse. Later, she returned to Brandon and was employed with the Unemployment Insurance Commission until her marriage to Wilbert Baxter ofKillarney. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbert in1974. In 1979, Helen married Robert Black of Killarney who predeceased her in 1994. Helen spent many relaxing and fun filled hours on the Killarney Golf Course with her husband and friends until she was no longer able. She was also an avid bridge player both in her early years in Brandon and later in Killarney. She really enjoyed attending curling events, baseball games and horse racing. Helen was also predeceased by two sisters, Lil McMaster (Francis) of Indiana, and Phyllis Jenkins (Richard) of Brandon. She leaves to mourn her passing a step-daughter Brenda Sanders (Robert) of LaSalle, Manitoba; step-grandchildren Corrina Hardman (Brent), and Kevin Sanders; nieces, Joan Milam of Indiana, Pat Twa (Gerald) of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Cathy Workman (Bev) of Brandon; nephews, Howard McMaster (Sandy) of Nevada, David Smiley (Louise) of Calgary, Doug Smiley (Debbie)of Arnes; brother-in-law AlvinSmiley of Brandon, and Heb and Rhena Bate, Killarney.
