Russell Elrod is dead at the age of 81.Elrod, a Democrat, served in the Senate from 1944 until 1968, when hewas defeated by a Republican, Jim Caldwell. He was president pro-tem of the Senate from 1953 to 1955.Dubbed the “Little Fox of Benton County,” he professed puzzlement at the label. “Pm sure it has nothing to do with my mental prowess/' he said in a 1967 interview.Born Nov. 30, 1904, at Mosely Prairie in what was then Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, he was the son of Claude and Cora Blackwood Elrod. He attended public schools at Siloam Springs and graduated from Joh Brown University and obtained his law degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.In addition to his service in the Legislature, Elrod served for 12 years as Siloam Springs city attorney, was a deputy prosecutor for Benton County, ana president of the county bar association. He had been a member of the state Supreme Court’s Committee on Professional conduct.
