Helen Allen, Widely Known Textile Historian, 66, DiesMiss Helen L. Allen. 66, of11030 Sherman Ave., a nationally known textile historian, died unexpectedly Wednesday (Aug. 14. (1968) in Mineral Point.Miss Allen was a professor of related arts at the University of Wisconsin where she taught since 1927.She was well-known for her extensive textile library and textile collection which she gathered in all parts of (he United States. Europe, and elsewhere. jHer collection included weaving, embroidery, tapestry andlaces ranging from early Ethiopian fabrics to contemporary. Miss Allen also collected antiques and glass canes.Miss Allen was the author of“American and European Hand-weaving.”She was born in Ann Arbor, Mich., and received bachelor of arts degrees from the CarnegieInstitute of Technology and theUniversity of Chicago. Miss Allen taught the history of art inMISS HELEN ALLENhigh school for a short time.She was a member of the Wis-I ■consin and the American Craftsmen Council, the Madison s Weavers Guild and the Midcen-tral Weavers Guild.There are no immediate survivors. |Funeral arrangements are pending at the Frautschi Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd.Arrangements are pending for a memorial service to be held in September by the Madison Friends, of which she was a long-time member.
