iOBITUARYJOHN SMITHJohn Smith, 82, died on Monday, July 22, following a lingering illness, at the home of his son, Mervyn Smith.Mr. Smith was born, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, Sr. A farmer all his lifetime, his first home following his marriage was at Lot 22, Con. 9 of Manvers Township. Seven years later they moved to Cavan Township and lived on a farm now owned by Cecil Ward, later moving to the property where his son Mervyn resides on Highway 7A, east of Bethany.In 1942 they retired to move into Bethany village where they resided until the death of his wife, the former Lila Gil-lis, in 1954. Since that time he has lived with the members of his family.Mr. Smith was always interested in civic affairs and in 1935 was elected a member of Cavan Council, representing the township for seven years as councillor, one year as deputy-reeve and two years as reeve.He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Bethany and was a warden for many years.Immediately surviving are three sons, Charles Smith, Mervyn Smith and Emory Smith, all of Cavan;’and four idaugh-ters, Mrs. Carl Porteous (Iva) and Mrs. Norman Braithwaite (Mildred) of Cavan; Mrs. Gordon Moffatt (Olive) of Bow-manville; Mrs. Kenneth Braithwaite (Helen) of Cobourg. There are 11 grandchildren: John and Allan Moffatt of Bow-manville, Ross Smith, Leora Smith, Glen Smith, Barrie Smith and Murray Smith of Cavan, Faye and Catharine Braithwaite, Cobourg and- Ray Porteous, Cavan.The funeral service was held in Bethany on July 24 from St. Paul’s Anglican Church with Rev. G. E. Meades officiating, assisted by Rev. T. G. Gault of Fenelon Falls.Burial was in St. John’s cemetery at Ida.Acting as pallbearers were Cecil WArd, Toronto; William Smith, Wilbert Smith, Harry O’Brian, Henry Jewison and Carl Smith.Flower bearers were Ross Smith, Glenn Smith, Ray Porteous, Allan Moffatt, John Moffat, Murray Smith, Brian Ward, Hugh McDonald, Mervyn Porteous, Gordon Staples, Percy Elgar and George Dean.(I(1I1(
