John L. Lupton, Capitalist, Dies In. N. C. N C., late yesterday, according to press dispatches He underwent operations on Thursday and Sunday following an attack of acute appendicitis at his home at BrevardMr Lupton’s life story reads almost like a work of fiction. He was born in 1861 just as the North and South were beginning tofight over sectional questions.Mr. Lupton’s father,* the laje John Lupton entered the Confederate Army and was killed in .battle u inuring the War Between theStates, leaving Mrs. Lupton with 4wo young children. John and a v! sister.Eager to get an education, John walked from Cedar Creek to Strasburg daily for his elementary education and after the completion of the work offered by the public schools there, he matriculated at the University of Virginia. At the university, Lupton performed odd jobs in order to work his way through school.Started As Lawyer After graduating from the Law School of the University of Virginia, he hung out his shingle at Lynchburg in 1886. It was in the latter city that he met the only daughter of Zereboam Patton, reputed “medicine king” of the south and owner of the Chattanooga Medicine Company. Lupton married Miss Patton and soon the former was associated with Mr. Patton in *hp medicine business.Soon after Mr. Luptoi 'Cttled at Chatanooga. Coca Cola began to be a popular “soft” drink and wth a Mr. Whitehead, Lupton secured the bottling rights for that drink throughout the south It was in this business that Mr. Lupton laid the foundation for an enormous fortune.At the time of his death. Mr. Lupton was regarded as one of Tennessee’s wealthiest men. He was vice-president of the Chattanooga Medicine Company from 1891 to 1906, had served as chairman of the First National Bank of Chattanooga and president of the Coca Cola Bottling Company of that city.S 1,000.000 To School Perhaps Mr. Lupton’s largest contribution for educational purposes was $1,000,000 to Oglethorpe University.Surviving Mr. Lupton arc his widow and several children, and a half-ister, Mrs. J.
