DR. BRIDGET JONESThe Department of Modern Languages, announces with deep regret the passing of Dr Bridget Jones in Oxford. England on April 4. 2000 A lecturer and later senior lec-turer in the Department of French, UWI, Mona, from 1964 to 1982. Dr. Jones was largely responsible for the introduction of courses in French, African and Caribbean Literature at UWI, which she taught alongside nineteenth and twentieth century French Literature and French Language. Her publication includes articles on both Francophone and Anglophone Caribbean writers.In recent years she pursued a particular interest in areas of writing in Guyane (French Guyana) which had previously attracted little scholarly attention, and in the Franchophone theatre of the Caribbean. She was also a poet in her own right. With Dr. Jones’ passing, UWI and the region as a whole, have lost a friend who will be remembered, not only for her sterling contribution to Caribbean scholarship, but also for the extent to which she identified with her adopted country and region. She leaves behind, as well as her many friends, her Jamaican husband, Donald, and Her two sons, Daniel and Matthew.
