Schmahl, a onetime cowpuncher who served 36 years as Minnesotasecretary of state and state treasurer, is dead.Schmahl, whose political record was unequalled in Minnesota, died Sunday after an illness of several weeks. He was 87.Schmahl served seven terms as secretary of state, from 1907 to 1921. He was state treasurer for 11 terms, from 1926 to 1927 and from 1939 until his retirement in 1950.Bom Aug. 1, 1867 in NicolletCounty, Schmahl moved with hisparents to Redwood Falls three years later. He worked as a cattle puncher in southwestern Minnesota from 1875 to 1881, then joined the Redwood Falls Gazette asan apprentice.After working in the job printing office of the Fargo Argus andWOODSTOCK, Minn.
