Cartwright, of this city, who died on Monday afternoon in the house of his son in law, Mr. John Hanna, at Ho. 371 Third street. This event, however, deserves more than a passing notice, for the deceased was not only widely known as a cultivated and high spirited gentleman, bat had rendered gallant service on the battle field in behalf of his adopted country. Bom in Kings County, Ireland, on the 15 th of Jane, eighty-one years ago, he came to the United States in 1835, having spent, meanwhile, five years in 'Canada. His father was for seventeen years an officer in the British army, but be, .though inheriting a strong taato for military service, chose to devote himself to civil life, and this the more so * because' he looked with strong dislike on British role in Ireland. He married and prospered here and was looking forward to the Autumn of his life when the civil war broke out. Ho promptly offered his services to the Republic and went to the front as an officer in the Irish Brigade in which he rose to the rank of major for gallant and meritorious services. At the battle of Fredericksburg he was wounded, but recovering he continued in service till the close of the struggle. His two-sons, not less patriotic than himself, also joined the Union forces, and both gave their lives to the cause, ono dying-on the battlefield and the other at homo of wounds received in battle. Since the close of the war the old gentleman has held a position in. the Hew York Custom House,where he was greatly beloved by the younger men about him. He was a member of the♦St. Patrick Society of this city and of several other benevolent and social organizations. His wife and two daughters survive him.
