T«s„ .March 28.—A tt1«-phone mesflase has just boon received here announcing the death of an old San Jacinto veteran. Capt. John Tom. who lived lu tlio eastern part or this county, near Llaky, about fifty miles from Rock Springs. Capt. Tom was born In Murray County. Tenn., In 1818, and cam© to Texas with his father in 1836. D’u'rJng this same year, while ho was only 17 years old, ho Joined Stupbcn A. Austin's company and participated iu the battle ot San Jacinto, In* which Gen. Case surrendered himself and the city of Austin to Gei». Austin. In iS3t, being then 18 years old, ho joined Gen- Sam Houston’* army and asr slsted In the destruction of Santa Anna’s hopcG aB well as.his army at San Jacinto. In the charge upon tho Mexicans he received a severe and painful wound In his left leg, from which he elowiy recovered, but from He effects he was lame tho rest of his life. In 1S46 Capt. Tom «et-tled In Guadalupe County before It was organized, ana In 1856 he *wae elected Sheriff of the county and held’the office four years, this being tho limit at that time. In 1862 he moved to Atascosa County which, then bplng on the frontloT. suffered greatly from Indian depredations.In 1863 Mr. Torn received a'commission to raise a company of rrangers for frontier protection, He with his company did faithful 'and efficient service for the fitafe. He bad one fierce battle with the Indians near the head of Son Miguel Creek, in which,he was finally victorious.In 1873 Capt. Tom was son t to the Legislature frepi Atascosa County and made a. true and faithful representative of his people.He moved to Frio Canyon, near Liaky, several ago, and ju 1353 had themisfortune to havo hie leg broken in attempting to dismount from hie horse.
