Shot While Attempting to Arrest Martin Miller at His Home at Camp Wilder -Miller Also Shot By Bush and Reported Dying. Deputy United State Mar shal James Bush of this city was shot and killed last night about 9 o'clock by Martin Miller, at his home out at Camp Wilder, nine miles east of Hatfield, and Miller was mortally wounded by Bush and is not expected to recover. The first news of the killing received in Mena was a telephone message to Sheriff Joplin from Hatfield last night, informing him that Mr. Bush had been shot and killed by Martin Miller and that Bush had shot and seriously wounded Miller. Aside from this statement no particulars of the killing was given. This morning Sheriff Joplin accompanied by Dr. A. J. Pool, county coroner, left on the local for Hatfield, from which place they drove out to the scene of the tragedy. This afternoon a telephone message from Hatfield to the Star stated that no particulars of the killing had been received at that place further than the fact that Bush was shot and killed by Miller while attempting to place him under arrest on a charge of having violated the government homestead law by cutting and removing timber. The only witnesses to the killing were two parties by the name of Miller and Givens who joined Mr. Bush late yesterday afternoon while on his way from Hatfield to Camp Wilder. Mr. Bush was appointed Dep uty United States Marshal about two years ago and prior to his appointment held a position as guard at the Federal jail in Fort Smith under Marshal Stehl. He had the name of being a fearless offer, ever ready to perform his duty and his untimely death and the manner in which he was killed is deeply regretted by all 1 w abiding citizens. Since the indictment by the federal Grand Jury of so many 1k county citizens for violating a homestead and timber law it stated that Mr. Bush received everal letters threatening him with bodily harm if he did not set up to his work. He was warmed by several of his friends that his life was in danger, but he paid little heed to their advice and continued to perform his jury in an unconcerned manner. M. rindfuller, the man who killed Mr. Bush has been a citi zen of Folk county for about four scars, and for the past two years was bein hing at Camp Wilder where he was employed as watch man of the property at that place. Several weeks ago Miller was arrested charged with attempting to poison the food of a young man by the name of Stone and at his examining tril was bound over to the grand jury in the sum . $300 Mr. Bush leaves a wife and four children to mourn his un timely death who have the sym pathy of all in their hour of deep sorrow. The remains of Mr. Bush will be brought to Mena and the funeral services held at the family residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, after which the remains will be taken to the Odd Fellows cemetery for sinterment, under an escort of Marons of which order he was a member.
