College Student, 22, Is Charged With Murdering Barnwell FamilyCOLUMBIA (AP) - A 22-year-old inan faces a court hearing today on charges issued in the slabbing deaths of a Barnwell couple and the arson murder of the couple’s 20-month-old daughter late Iasi month, an official says.James William Ackerman of Barnwell, a student at Orangeburg Technical College, was charged with three counts of murder and one count of arson late Monday, according to Hugh Munn of the State law Enforcement Division.The SI£D spokesman said Ackerman was brought to SI.ED headquarters at Columbia Monday evening for questioning and subsequently charged in a warrant issued by Barnwell Magistrate Robert H. Martin.The suspect was held at the Central Correctional Institution Monday night. Munn said.He said Ackerman was charged with murder in the deaths of Letcher Corel!. 24. Elaine Corell. 21. and Ilt;aci Corell. 20 months. 1-etcher Corell worked at the Savannah River Plant.Ackerman was accused of stabbing the Corell couple to death early Sunday, Oct. 25. then returning to the couple's mobile home early Monday and setting the fire that killed the baby, Munn said.Until autopsies were performed, officials thought all three family members died during the fire.We think they (the Corellsi had gone out Saturday night to a bar or night club of some sort. And Ackerman and Letcher Corell got into some kind of altercation. Munn said.He said the investigation was a joint effort by the Barnwell County Sheriff’s office and SI JCD agents.
