Accused Killer of 8 People Ordered to Plead May 21SANTA CRUZ (UPI) — Hulking Edmund Kemper III. declared harmless by psychiatrists m i d w a v through his alleged murder spree, was ordered held without bond yesterday on charges of killing his mother, her friend andsix hitchhiking coeds in the past year.Kemper 24, a six-foot, nine-inch tall giant towered over seven guards as he was escorted, handcuffed and chained, to his arraignment before Municipal Judge Donald May, who ordered him to entera plea May 21.*The judge also agreed to issue a gag order on local law enforcement officers — about two hours after Ii'trir-t \ttv. Peter Chang told newsmen Kemper had confessed to the eightmurders.Suspect ComposedThe suspect, who killedtwo grandparents in histeens, wore blue jail coveralls and was chained around the ankles and the waist during his appearance in the closely guarded court. He was composed as he answered the judge’s questions about his rights and his lawyer.The district attorney said he would seek murder indictments against Kemper from the county Grand Jury, which wouldeliminate the necessity ofva preliminary hearing on the eight counts filed yes-terdav.Chang also disclosed that Kemper was examined by two psychiatrists in K r e s n o last Sept. 17 and declared in “excellent psychiatric health” and absolutely no danger to anyone. The district at tor-ney said Kemper admitted killing and dismembering a Berkeley teenager two days before the exam-ination.Killed Young GirlThe suspect, who spent five years in a mental hospital after killing twograndparents at age 14, told authorities he picked up Aiko Koo lb, in Berkeley last Sept. 14 and drove her to Bonny Doon, near Santa Cruz, where hekilled and dismembered her. The next day. he buried parts of her body in various parts of Santa Cruz County.“Two days later, Kemper went to Fresno, wherehe was examined bv two%•p s y c h iatrists, both of whom diagnosed him as no longer being a threat to society,” Chang said. “One stated Kemper’s motorcycle was ‘more of a threat to bis life andhealth than anv threat he is at present to anyoneelse.Decapitated BodiesKemper, who led authorities to burying places of parts of his victims during the week end, told authorities he picked up the first two coeds in Berkeley, 80 miles north ofhere, on May 8. 1072.Chang said Kemper killed Mary Ann Pesc 19, and Anita Luchessa 18. FresnoState College coeds hitchhiking to Stanford, off Palomares Road near Hayward on the East side of San Francisco Bay.He decapitated the bodies the next dav and%/dumped them in the Santa Cruz mountains.The district attorney said Miss Koo, who was picked up in Berkeley four months later, was Kemper’s third victim.Kemper admitted striking closer to his home in nearby Aptos on Jan. 8, when he picked up Cabr-illo College coed Cynthia Schall 19, drove her to the Watsonville area and shot her to death. He said he d i smembered the bodv and threw it off a cliff at Roekv Creek in Carmelwand buried the head inthe backyard of the apartment he shared with his mother.Shot CoedsChang said Kemper confessed to picking up Alice Liu 21 a nd Rosalind Thorpe 23 on the University of California at Santa Cruz campus on Feb. band shooting both of them to death in his car a few minutes later.He admitted beheading them and dumping the bodies the next day at Eden Canyon in Alameda Countv and the heads in the Devil's Slide area south of Pacifica.C h a ng said Kemper picked up Miss Thorpe first and believes that Miss Liu got in the car because she was under the impression she was riding with a couple. Kemper told authorities Miss Liu. also noticed a Santa Cruzc a m p us administrativepersonnel parking sticker on the auto. Kemper had been given the sticker by his mother, a UC employe.Motive ToldKemper said he killed his mother Mrs. Clarenell Strandberg 52 at their Aptos apartment in the early morning of April 21 with a single hammer blow . He later decapitated her and chopped off one hand before stuffing thebodv m a closet, Chang' # ■*said.•He felt that shortly he would be caught and didn’t want her to know w'hat he was doing,” the district attorney answered when asked about the motive for Mrs. Strandberg’sdeath.Chang said Kemper invited Mrs. Sally Hallet 59,a friend of his mother’s, tothe house later in the day on the pretext he would take tnith women out to dinner.
