Linked To Death Of Barnwell TeenBy RODDIE BURRIS Staff WriterBARNWELL — Accused serial killer Henry Louis Wallace Monday reportedly confessed to murdering an 18-year-old Barnwell woman whose body was found just outside Aiken County in Barnwell.According to Barnwell County Sheriff Joey Zorn, during an interview Monday Wallace gave a “detailed” taped confession to killing Tashanda Bethea. Ms. Bethea’s body was found April 1, 1990 on U.S. 278 near the Aiken Countyline.Zorn said he and Barnwell County Investigator Jay Gant obtained the confession in Charlotte, where Wallace is being held on murder charges in the deaths of 10 other females.Zorn said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is continuing to check different agencies around the state, particularly where young, black females may be missing, to determine if there are further connections with Wallace.Barnwell authorities filed murder charges against Wallace Tuesday.Ms. Bethea was reported missing March 18,1990.An autopsy report on Ms. Bethea’s body was inconclusive oniywhether the victim had been sexually assaulted, Zorn said, though it did reveal evidence of sex.Ms. Bethea’s body was badly decomposed by the time it was discovered, authorities said.Wallace reportedly told Barnwell authorities he had killed Ms. Bethea out of fear she would talk to authorities about other crimes he had committed. Those crimes involved burglaries, Zorn stated.Well-thought of in the community, Wallace nonetheless had several brushes with the law, including a 10-year sentence for third-degree burglaryCounty of criminal sexual assault.Wallace served only three months on the suspended 10-year sentence, authorities said.,“He was very humble, very polite, very well-mannered and intelligent,” Zorn said of Wallace’s demeanor during the interrogation in Charlotte. “He was impressive.”(See WALLACE, Page 3A)
