Exams Ordered For Accused MurdererANCHORAGE (AP) - Over the objections of his attorney, the man accused of killing six persons and wounding two others at McCarthy on Tuesday has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination.Louis D. Hastings’ attorney, Public Defender John Salemi, objected to the order by District Court Judge Elaine Andrews on Thursday, claiming such an examination would violate the unemployed computer programmer’s right to remain silent.Assistant District Attorney Gail Voigtlander argued, however, that no motive had been established for the slayings and it was likely that Hastings’mental state will become an issue in the case.Hastings, an off-and-on resident of McCarthy for the past year or so who also maintains a home in Anchorage, is charged with six counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault.Six persons were shot to death and two others were wounded in burst of violence in the old mining community in the Wrangell Mountains southeast of Glennallen on Tuesday. Hastings was taken into custody later the same day as he sped on a snowmachine toward Chitina.
