Thursday, April 20, 2006 • 4BTrial for convicted serial killer set for 2008KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A judge has granted acontinuance in the federal trial of convicted serial killer John E. Robinson in what is expected to be a death penalty case.A federal grand jury indicted Robinson, 62, on a charge of kidnapping resulting in the death of Suzette Trouten of Newport, Mich., in March, in what then-U.S. Attorney Todd Graves called the equivalent of a federal murder charge.Robinson’s defense counsel, citing more than 200,000 pages worth of documents, moved to have the trial delayed.Tlie trial had been scheduled to begin April 24, but a judge on Tuesday rescheduled it for May 12, 2008.A Johnson County. Kan., judge sentenced Robinson to death in January 2003 for Trouten’s murder, as well as that of Izabela Lewicka of West Lafayette, Ind. He also received a life sentence in the murder of a third woman, whose body was never found, and life in prison in Mis* souri after pleading guilty to five other murders.But Kansas* death penalty law was tossed out by the state’s highest court in 2004, and only the U.S. Supreme Court could reinstate the death sentence against Robinson.Graves said in March a formal decision had not been made on whether to seek the death penalty in the federal case.
