A Fact A Day About Iowa CityBloody BattleOne of the bloody battles in which the 24th Iowa regiment engaged during the Civil war was at Champion’s Hill, Miss. That Hawkcye regiment, according to General A. F. Hovcy, suffered the greatest percentage of loss, as to killed, captured, wounded, and the like, in the entire brigade and division, wherein he commanded. _The 24th Iowa sent 41? men intothe engagement, and the casualty list reached 189, a shade more than 45 per cent. General Hovey, in his reports to the war departments of the state and nation, glowingly eulogizes his officers and men.Colonel James R. Slack similarly expatiates upon their “gallantry. coolness under fire, courage, perseverance, and determination.’' Lieut. Colonel Ed. Wright, of Cedar county—himself, wounded at Cedar Creek. Va., in one of the regiment’s many battles — likewise showers the regiment with praise for its rare qualities. Colonel Wright became a Brevet Brigadier general.The organization, as a whole numbered 1204, and of these 663 are named on the casualty lists. There were 71 killed; 260 wounded; 55 died of wounds; 201 died of disease; and the rebels took 76 prisoners. More than one man out of every two in the unit was thus stricken in one way or another.Iowa City and Johnson county soldiers’ names appear again and again in the war reports on that dread list. At the blood-drenched Champion's Hill. Miss., death claimed Simon KrauUi, Isaac S. Boyers (Bowers?), James Hem-mijigway. Jr.. Thomas E. Lang-don. and David Steinberger.At Champion’s Hill, too. many local soldiers were wounded, the list including; Samuel Cozine. Corporal Win. Ferguson, Srgt. John E. Jayne. Albert G. Moore. Isaac Newton, and First Lieutenant Jeremiah B. Swafford who was alsowounded at Clear Creek.Winchester’s wounded list, likewise. was long. On it were Cornelius M. Westfall. Sooter Spillman. Israel M. Ritter. Isaac Miller. Srgt. Wm. E. Berry, Corporal Cornelius F. Bumgardner,'Thomas R. Chandler, and James Fletcher.Still others wounded were Orin B. Ford. David P. Hawthorn, and John Knott, alt at Cedar Creek. Knott was transferred to the Veterans' Reserve corps. Wounded atPleasant Hill.. La., was John S. Foote; at Helena, Ark.. Rufus Lumbard. who was transferred to the Invalid Corps.Rebels captured the following: At Cedar Creek. Lyman Bartlett, Joseph Ruby, Edmond C. C. Geary, who died as a prisoner, at Salisbury, N. C.; David P. Hawthorn, Wm. A. J. Hill. Srgt. De Witt C. Holmes, and Corporal David W. Parrott: at Mansfield, La, William Mcttcrhlzo** ( ?) who died in captivity; at Newmarket. Va., Charles W. Romp (paroled); at Winchester. Samuel Jones, who returned to his company, two months later.Fatally wounded were Corporal Cornelius F. Bumgardner (Winchester); Thomas Evans (Cedar Creek) who was buried in the National cemetery, in Baltimore; Albert G. Moore (Champion’s Hill); Cornelius M. Westfall, buried in the National cemetery at Winchester, where lie fell: and Israel M. Ritter (Winchester.)Death from disease, while in the service, came to Marion F. Ardrey, Amzy Caldwell. Christopher Tap-pan, Adam Nickle, Lafayette Hawthorn, Charles Westenhavcr. Clark H. Stewart. Charles W. Hill, Jacob Goodsher. Abram Hershey. John N. Ciark, Edmond F. Holcomb, Timothy Hunter, David H. Helm. Noah Miller, and Srgt. Edwin M. Hamilton.First Lieutenant Joseph R. Gould, of the Pedec settlement, was in Company D, captained by Jacob B. Casebeer of Iowa City, whose second lieutenant, was John H. Branch, of Iowa City. Lieut. Gould became a captain and was killed in action at Winchester.Discharged because of wounds or disabilities were John S. Foote, Albert J. Reeder. James Fletcher, Thomas R. Chandler, Isaac Newton. David P. Hawthorn. Albert J. Reeder, and Orlando S. Hartman.—E. R.
