Wheeler, of Ferndale, this afternoon brought additional particulars of the murder of A. 0. Mayfield on Monday evening. It is thought that Guildy did not intend to kill old man Mayfield, but sought only the life of the son, with whom Guildy had personal difficulty growing out of the election last fall. Young Maytield had Guildy arrested as a dangerous character and the latter was placed under bonds to keep the peace. Guildy sold his ranche last February for $1,100 and left for parts unknown. On last Monday a week ago he was seen at Semi-almioo. llis presonco at Ferndale was not discovered until he was seen engaged in shooting the Mayfields. A daughter of the dead man, about 18 years old, was taking down washing in the yard adjoining the house when Guildy shot her father, just as he was going up the stairs on the outside of the house, leading to the second story. She did not see the shooting. Guildy then approached her and asked her where her brother was. The latter was coming around the house and she, pointing to him, said: “There hocomes.” Guildy raised his Winchester and tired at him, shooting him through the left lung. The plucky girl at once picked up an axe lying near and pursued the murderer. As she followedhim she stumbled over the bodv of her*father. She stopped to feel if life still remained, and when she found that he was pulseless and coid, she swooned, falling on his body. Guildy fled to Oxford, two miles distant, where he burned a barn belonging to the Mayfields. Thence it is supposed he fled to a cabin some three miles from Ferndale. The sheriff and a posse of fourteen men started in pursuit. The county commissioners of Whatcom promptly offered$500 reward for the delivery of Guil-dy’a body.TIIE MURDERER KILLED.Will Jenkins, of the Reveille aends us this morning the information that John Guildy was shot and killed this afternoon in the woods two miles from Ferndale. He was surprised by men who were in search of him. Guildy fired two shots before he was killed. Everybody feels grateful.THE MAYFIELD FAMILY.A. C. Mayfield, who was killed, leaves a wife, tsvo daughters and two sons. One of the bouh, Dr. R. N. May-Roland Co., book publishers, 1ms entered an action against the firm for $30,000 for false arrest. Alexander Gadreau has entered an action in the Superior Court against the Congregational nuris for $2,000 damages for loss of his wife and daughter from smallpox; the former having contracted the disease from wuahing tlie floor of a room belonging to the nuns where a smallpox patient died.Hagersville, Sept. 30.—A. W.Thompson left here for Hamilton on Saturday morning. The afternoon train from Hamilton ran over his body, which was lying on the track near Hamilton. The train could not be stopped in time to avoid running over tlie body. It is thought Thompson fell from the morning train and alighting on the back of liis head was instantly killed, lie was President of the Conservative Association of the countv of lfaldiiimnd formsome years.Markdale, Sept. 20.— Ford A Stinson’s steam saw mills were to-day destroyed by Hre with a quantity of lumber. Fleming,the pioneer brakeman on the Port Dover railway, was killed while coupling cars here to-day. He had beenmarried oniv three weeks.*Ottawa, Sept. 20.— Last evening aparty of lads went to the cemetery, situated on the outskirts of the city, and removed a cofliu containing the skeleton of a man, which they broke up and disposed of to a junk dealer for old bones. They have not yet been identified, but circumstances point to them as being members of some of the most respectable families in the city.An increase of the permanent militia baa been authorized. The 20th of Julv has been decided on. It will con-6ist until further orders of two companies of Mounted Infantry, fifty men twenty five horses, each at Winnipeg.
