Major John Speedie, University student in 1934-37, commanded the first actual assault on St. Malo citadel in France. This fort was surrounded on three sides by sea and he attacked it by crossing; ! a narrow bottleneck of land heavily fortified with trip wires, barbed wire, anti-tank obstacles, and mines.
