;For the Clermont Courier, meeting of the “ Clermont Boys” in relation to Lieut. S. R. S. West.At a meeting of the “Clermont Boya,’’ held at I(1 Camp Wool, on the 1st day of September, 1847, p-, Capt. John W. Lo#fc was called to the Chair, ;o and T. G. Wood was appointed Secretary. The Chairman briefly stated the object of the meet-c- ing, remarking that, in consequence of a large l. number of the enrolled volunteers of this Coro-1' pany having bacliei out, and others having join-lr j ed another Company in this Regiment, we are c~ j left without a sufficient number of men to enti-c~ i tie us to be mustered into the United States’ j service; and being advised that the “Brown ,n j County Boys,” under 1st Lieut. Fyffe, are ready 18 to unite with us, provided we will give them the 1st Lieutenancy and a portion of the non-commissioned officers—which union will save the Company from disorganization—it therefore becomes imperiously necessary that we take some measures, either to effect such union or to disband the Company. Therefore, on motion, it was Resolved, That we accept the proposition of t the Brown County Boys, provided Lieut. West j. will resign, and save us and our county from the Q mortification of a failure.n Resolved, That a committee of three persons l_ be appointed to confer with 1st. Lieut West, and d to state to him at length the reasons which com-n pel us to request him to resign, i- Resolved, That this whole Company have en-ls tire confidence in the ability, integrity, bravery r- and worth of our friend and Lieutenant, S. R. S. l- West, and that nothing but the most urgent ne-;s cessity would induce ns to make the request we - do of him; but being satisfied that he has been, is and is still, influenced by the highest patriotism and devotion to the service of his country, he y will make the sacrifice, rather than have our Company dispersed and our county disgraced.V» The Chair then appointed Sergeant Thos. W.Colwell, Corporal James Kellum, and Mr. Josiah A. Tice, the committee. The committee retired to consult with Lieut. West, and after a brief absence, returned and reported that they had conversed with him, and iA advised him fully of the situation of the Compt-ny—that Lieut. West stated that he saw the necessity which compelled the Company to make the request, and that, to save the county from the mortification of having its Company return from *y j the Camp, and the volunteers from the disap-50 pointment of not Serving in this campaign, he 3! was willing to make the sacrifice, although it ftt was indeed a great sacrifice to him; and there-T fore, at the request of the Company, and for the 3r reasons stated, he reluctantly tendered his re-e signation.f*1 On motion, it was thenResolved, That the thanks of this company are re due to Lieut. W est, for thus nobly sacrificing his to own feelings to save the Company—that the zeal c and industry which he has manifested in assist-re ing to raise the Company is worthy of the honor °f and applause of his fellow-citizens.Resolved, That in his retiracy from among us, he takes with him our most sincere wishes for ro his future welfare and happiness, and that we a_ sincerely regret the necessity which requires us ,e | to request of him this sacrifice, and demands of him to make it.Resolved, That the Chairman be requested to present to Lieut. West a copy of the last fore-.y going resolutions, and that we hereby authorize V); the Chair to sign our names to such resolutions. j0’| JOHN W.
