■A Most Distinguished Guest.Last afternoon when the Southern Pacific arrived there wa« attached to the train a private car bearing GeneralJames A Longstreet and party. The party consisted of the general and his wife, Colonel and Mrs Sanders, Miss Mon tine Sanders, Mrs. J. H. Hunt, mother of Mrs. Sanders.of Gainesville. Ga.; Lewis W. Haskell, of Abbeville,S. C.:and Emory P. Shannon, of El-berton. Ga.4General Longstreet is too well known to make mention of his services to the confederate states. At the beginning of the war General Robert E. Lee, when astced by a friend as to 11 who was the best man for the positionof commander of the forces of the confederacy, unhesitatingly replied, “Longstreet.” After tne congress or the confederate states had elected General Lee to the command of the united forces General James Longstreet was one of General Lee's ablest assistants. Gen. Longstreet s opinion as to theconduct of battles and campaigns wasnearly always the one acted upon.Last year the general was appointed Unit1 d States railroad commissioner, aod it is in the line of his duties that the general and party are making atour of the the United States. Theyleft Washington city about two month ago and have made a complete circuit of the nation. They have just come from the Pacific Coast. P rom here the party * ill go to the City of Mexico for about ten days, returning by way of Eagle Pass to tne United States.The general said this morning: “ftis with pleasure I stop over here and am met by my old friends. ! was sta tioned here as a captain of the 6th infantry in 1856 and we had a great old time. I can remember a number of the old citizens here and especially .Joe Magoftin, as F was his god father. 1was stationed at Albuquerque at theoutbreak of the civil war and at once resigned my position to otl'er my services to the confederate states.I passed through VA Paso in the early part of ’61 and that was the last time J was ever here.”The general didn't let his friends know that he was coming and it was by the merest accident that they knew of his arrival, hut as soon as it was known he was sought after and taken about the town.
