DOUGHERTY Executive EditorCompany I* Middletown's National Guard unit that wasfederalized in the early days of World War One, was hackin the news in mid-September of 1918.Most of the members of Co. I had been transferred to the 107th Infantry Regiment of the 27th Division, which was leading the assault in Flanders on Sept. 17, 1918 — just fifty years ego today.St. Mihiel had been wiped out the previous weekend, end Allied forces were pushing forward on all fronts. Victory was in sight.But there was bad news from Europe, too; casualty lists were coming in, and several Orange County residentswere among those killed or wounded.Cp. Herbert L» Miller of Newburgh, who bad been a member of the National Guard unit of that city at die time of federalization, was among the dead.Parents of Pvt. Emory R, Osborn of Montgomery also had unofficial word of their son's death in a letter from another member of his outfit.Pvt. Wilbur Utter of Warwick died of wounds sufferedin the Flanders offensive.Among the wounded were CpL William Broadhead of Middletown, a member of the 107th Infantry Regiment; Pvt. Patrick Powers of Goshen; and Pvt. Edward McEwen of Newburgh. All were reported slightly injured in action.On the home front in September of 1918 plans were under way for die Fourth Liberty Loan drive.GJD. Theleen, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, was piblicity chairman for the war loan campaign, whichhad as its slogin: Lend the Way They Fight!”^ •%Mr. Theleen announced that a feature of the campaign in Middletown would be the arrival of the Treasury Department's War Exhibit” train at the Erie station early in October.Several officers, who had served with Gen. Pershing, were to accompany die exhbftit of war relics and address Middletown residents on the war loan.
