Among the first American troops to ente rJapan were two men from the Lock'Haven area, both members of the 472nd Glider Field Artillery Battalion, a unit of the 31th Airborne Division. Transported by a huge fleet of aircraft. these Lock Have men were flown from Luzon where they participated in the rarr.paign against the Japancec from Febru- ary to May. After the completion of this campaign, a!! received airborne training on Luzon. There mer also wear battle star' for their participation the New Guinea campaign. T/5 Melvin L. Wagner, a glidermsn, whose parents.- Mr. and Mrs. Crace Wagner reside at Salona. He entered the service on Jan. 6. 3943. and attended Lamar Township school. Pfc. Melvin R. Bartholomew, aparatrooper, whose father. E. J.Bartholomew resides at 526 Maple St. He was formerly emp’oved at the Blooms burg Silk Mifi. He entered the service on Jan. fi. 1943. and attended Lock Haven High School.
