50 Cents►►►Precautions beins takenInour ownBy LARRY KENNEDYMessenger News EditorLike Americans everywhere, Gatesville area residents were shocked and devastated Tuesday morning when terrorists carried out attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., possibly killing thousands of people.Flags were immediately loweredto half-mast at schools and most establishments, and prayer services were called that same night at many local churches.“I was shocked that they could pull this off,” said Tony Burke as he left a prayer gathering at the Gatesville Church of Christ Tuesday night. “(I came) to pray for sanity for our leaders and their leaders. I think that’s why most peopleare here.”The attack began shortly before 8 a.m. Central Daylight Savings Time when an American Airlines Boeing 767 smashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.Television cameras soon focused on the 110-story building and those watching were horrified when a second jet, a United Airlines Boeing767, came into view and veered into the south tower.It was soon learned that both planes had been hijacked from the Boston airport by terrorists.The acts of terrorism were followed at 8:40 a.m. when anotherhijacked American Airlines jet crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and at 9 a.m. a United Airlines crashed about 80 milessoutheast of Pittsburgh, PA. Authorities speculate the plane, which had also been hijacked, was heading for Camp David, MD,“This is a despicable act of cowardice,” U.S. Representative Chet Edwards (D-Waco) said in a prepared statement. “Let there he no doubt that our nation will find and punish the terrorists responsible for this act of war against the American people, Our hearts and prayers are with the innocent victims of the tragic and senseless act, and with their loved ones.“Those who would challenge our national spirit will soon learn that the American family always finds inner strength and unity in limes of threat and tragedy. That spirit will never be broken by acts of cowards.
