Stowe, Robert Fisch, and Philip Cavanaugh.Historical Vails Gate site to open to public in springVAILS GATEThe New Windsor Cantonment at Vails Gate will be opened to the public next spring, according to an announcement at a press conference on the grounds Monday.The cantonment, the site of the last camping ground of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, is being developed by the National Temple Hill Association, which owns 56 acres in its own name.The association's land is supplemented by 228 acres being purchased by the Town of New Windsor for use as a historic park. When the town finishes buying the land, it will be turned over to the association for development.Donald C. Gordon, association president, an-nounced that admission will be charged for the individual buildings, but that admission to the grounds will be free as in the past.The major building at the cantonment will be the Publick Building, a reconstruction of the Temple of Virtue In which Gen. George Washington refused to become King of America and quelled an army revolt against Congress for failure to pay salaries.Other buildings in the complex will be a farrier's (blacksmith’s) shop, sutler’s (storekeeper’s) shop, the Southard (Saxon) barn from Fishkill,. armorer’s shop, and the Masonic Lodge and Museum.
