I at Inst consented T con sidered that the country needed every able bodied man to aid in putting down the rebellion. Their regiment, went, to Baltimore, nnd afterward T he came restless and unensv and wanted to join them, My younger brother was eager I should, nnd mv old^V brother reluctantly consented. Going to Bal timore I entered the hospital and was nurse to the sick and wounded. There 1 frequently met mv two brothers, and was tolerably contended, but at length I received insults nnd ungrateful return from some of the recovered soldiers. Some were kind hearted and grateful. I was determin ed to be with my brothers, yet. I could not endure the continued insults, and so 1 asked mv broth ers' consent to dress in male attire ami join their regiment in some capacity so as to be near them. I proposed to act as Orderly to the Major, who was our second cousin on father’s S' *e. My brother first peremptorily refused his consent, but the younger and mvself insisted and he final ly bur. reluctantly yielded. When I assumed male clothes my yonnger brother complimented me and said I looked like a great green hoy He thought t he disguise was perfect. He took me to some rough places to accustom me to act naturally. I recollect going with a large party where the glasses were handed round to drink. As I undertook to “tip the glass,” my hand trembled awkwardiv, but no one seemed to notice it. T enlisted and was sworn in as the Major's Orderly. The regiment wasordered to New Orleans under Gen. Butler My vouuger brother was wounded in a skirmish and died in consequence. I nearly went crazy. I was'in the second assault on Ba ton Rouge, and received a severe sabre cut on the right arm. A ball also grazed one of my lower limbs, and a number passed through my clothes In a short time the Major discovered my sex. but, learning nil the circumstances, and that I would stay with mv brothers, he let me remain, and treated me as respectfully and kind ly as a father could do. T got on very well till on one occasion a man who suspected me attack ed me in an out of the way place, when I had to defend myself.bind, after giving him warning, I shot him with n four shooter. I meant to disable his arm, but he stooped so quick that the ball entered his face and found its way utmor his skull cap. 1 attended him for two weeks till he was out of danger, but would not permit him to speak to me. When he attempted to I fold him I should leave unless he desisted mid he then would not. Others wondered much, but didn’t understand and said J. was a foolish boy.
