Monday Evening, September 11,1939APPLETON POST-CRESCENTStudents Return To Gasses Today In Public SchoolsThree Remaining Parochial Institutions Re-Open DoorsAppleton High school students,their vacations at an end, weregreeted by Sowers in the fountainand green grass as they walked tothe new building on Badger avenue to start the 1938*40 school year this morning.The appearance of the grounds in front of the new building and the mild,- pleasant weather contrasted with the humps of mud and driving rain that marked last year’s first day when the area in front of the school looked like a backwoods bo? and students walked wooden planks to get to the front door.Appleton’s public schools and three remaining parochial schools opened their doors this morning. The three parochial schools to resume classes were St Paul Lutheran, St Therese Catholic, and St Mary Catholic. Helble, principal of Appleton High school, was elected national president of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at its biennial convention in French Lick Springs, Ind* Saturday.Helble, who is state chairman of the American Legion’s Americanism v4 committee, told fraternity members at the convention banquet that nothing permanent except death can come of the new European war and that the United States has no more business participating in it than it had in the World war.“Both the depression and the new v ar originated from the World war. ♦We were *taken in’ then, are we going to make the same mistake twice?” Helble asked.“Promises of Hitler, Stalin, Chamberlain and Daladier are not to be trusted as the rape of China, Ethiopia and Czechoslovakia and the unpaid war debts attest.
