Col. The Hon. Gordon Churchill, D.S.O.Q.C., former principal of the Dauphin high school. soldier and politician passed away on Aug. 3,1985. in Port Moody B.C., after a short illness. He was 86 years old and a Veteran of two world wars. He leaves to mom an only daughter, Mrs. N. Cusson.Gordon Churchill and I enlisted in the F\rt Garry Horse on Sept. 8,1939, the first recruiting drive in Dauphin.Col. Churchill was taken from the Garry’s in England just before D- day, as being too old. However, in Normandy, France, he was given the job of organizing and leading the first Kangaroo squadron to make the night attack on Falaise. Tbo old for combat, they said.After I recoverd from wounds in France, I return to Europe, to Tilbury in Holland where I rejoined Col. Churchill. He was forming the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment. Shortly thereafter, I became his personnel Kangaroo driver.From then on, 1 was in daily contact with him and we finished the war together in Oldenburg.We started off together in Dauphin and finished the war together.
