-.Continued on page 2.1merit crop estimate on Thursday!t!Joplin Men Will LeaveGChTonight to Search forahtiGold in South AmericaAfter many weeks of preparation, the tropical gold expedition is under way to the Andes mountains of South America, headed by Joplin and Wichita men, who will spend the next year or more developing a mountain of gold said to have been discovered by Albert H. Monteith of Joplin, who spent some time in the republic of Colombia as superintendent of construction for the Standard Oil Company.Steamship tickets and passports have been received in Joplin for Monteith, who will have charge offield operations in South Americaand'will head the expedition into the wilds of the Andes mountains, Brance Willsj also of Joplin, and C. D. Schroeder and G. A. Davidson of Wichita, Kan. Davidson now is in Washington obtaining' the necessary papers from the Colombian consul to insure prompt cooperation of South American officials with the party upon arrival. Davidson, an oil capitalist, will •join the group in New York city and the expedition will sail from New oYrk eSptember 16 on the steamship Martinque for the port of Cartagena, Colombia.Prom Joplin, the expedition is shipping four Cooley gold sludge tables, besides much other Vninor equipment for preliminary work in the search for gold. A Johnson motor for motorboat operations also is being taken to aid in local transportation on the Magdalena river near Jiradot, that city and Bogota t'O be headquarters for thfcatiti/expedition while int the * South American country. Other equipment will include clothing, bedding, tents, small mining tools, etc.Arriving at Cartagena, the expedition will transfer the equipment across a small range of mountains to the Magdalena river, stopping at Calamar, thence up the river to Jiradot. Headquarters will be established there, and the necessary number of native Indians engaged to act as guides and pack carriers. The party win be armed and then will proceed into the interior in the quest for the gold-bearing quartz. An assay made of the specimens brought back by Monteith showed a gold content of $35,000 to the ton.While in the republic of Colombia, Monteith learned of the location of the gold treasure through a grizzled, old- prospector named Tom Underland. Since returning to the states, Monteith has ne^er lost sight of the time when he could again visit the gold country, and has always insisted that he would secure the necessary finance to develop the proposition. Now J the party is on its way, leaving Joplin tonight for New York City, thence by steamer to South America.O. B.
