Benton Shrewsbury Receives Discharge From Army ServiceBy Register Staff WriterMULLENS—Benton D Shrevvs-' bury, whose rapid advancement from private to master sergeant ! was termed as “something for Ripley” by the public relations office at Boca Raton army air field, Florida, is now returning to civilian life after receiving his discharge from *he army at Camp Atterburv, Indiana.Shrewsbury has been stationed at the Boca Raton field since April, 1945, and left there on August 22 for Fort McClellan, Alabama, and vvas sent from there to the separation center at Camp Atter-bury.He and his wife, the former M;$s Anna Lee Tcaford. of Mullens,plan to make their home in Beck -ley, where nc will resume 'hi?ork w.th the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone company on October 1. At present they are seeking a home or apartment in Berkley She was with him at his Florida base.Next week the plan to visit in Virginia as the guests of Mrs. Shrewsbury's grandmother, Mrs. F B. Teaford, of near LexingtonThe veteran began his military service as private and in one month wrs made buck” sergeant; curing the next month he was made staff sergeant, and after a two-months pause, was made master sergeant.He was in charge of ma nten-ance of. radio equipment tor the4150th base unit at the Boca Raton army air field, which is a technical school of the A A F. framing command.Authorized to wear the distinguished unit citation, and the European theater campaign ribbon u .th two battle stars, Shrewsbury was sent to Florida after several months’ work in helping to form B-29 squadrons needed in the Pacific.He returned to the states last November after s ipervising the maintenance of all radio equipment on the 75 B-24s in his outfit. which vv as based in England. The squadron bombed virtually every tai get of importance in Germany. having mote than 300 missions to its credit.Inducted in March. 1942, the soldier was first sent to Jefferson Barracks. Missouri, and then to Scott field, Illinois, for schooling as a radio operator and maintenance man. Assigned to the second air force upon graduation he did transtitional cross-country fly ng in B-17s and B-24s until permanently grounded in November, 1943.He later was sent to Tucson, Arizona, and was attached to the 550th bomb squadron of the 385th bombardment group as section chief and it was while stationed there that he rose rapidly in rank. The squadron next was stationed a? Lowry field, Denver. Colorado, for its last phase of training before going overseas.
