Cadet Mittie R. Avant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie L. Avant, 1935 Ashland, Chicago Heights, recently completed training in fundamental military skills at the Army ROTC basic camp at Fort Knox, Ky. She will attend Alabama A and M university, Normal, this fall.The basic camp is designed to give junior college graduates and college sophomores who have not taken ROTC courses the chance to enter the program. The camp also qualifies high school graduates for the ROTC program at any one of the nation’s six military junior colleges.Cadet Derek H. Brown, a student at Ouachita Baptist university, Arkadel-phia, Ark., recently received practical work in military leadership at the Army ROTC advanced camp at Fort Riley, Kan.The five week camp provided an opportunity for cadets to develop and demonstrate leadership capabilities in a field training environment. Most cadets fulfilled their camp requirement during the summer between their junior and senior years in college.Brown is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Brown, 18466 Cowing court, Homewood.Mittie AvantRamiro Lopez of School street, Chicago Heights, was meritoriously promoted to her present rank upon graduation from recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit depot, Parris Island, S.C.She received the accelerated promotion for superior performance during the eight weeks of training, which emphasized teamwork and self-discipline.
