Wins Trophy at Ft. StewartHie Georgia National Guard's Company D, of the 560ih Engineer Battalion, can be especially proud of its accomplishments on Labor Day.Because of hard work and concerted efforts, Company D — stationed in Bainbridge and Thomasville — won a trophy for being the best administrative unit and having the top supply room in the battalion.PSG James. L. Carmen, of Thomasville, accepted the award from Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Raymond Grant, of Columbus, at Ft. Stewart, Ga.Company D logged 17,000 wheel vehicle miles and 1,500 equipment hours during its animal training 15-day period, 'at Ft. Stewart, said Capt. W. C. Calhoun, commanding officer.First, there was a training test covering primary and secondary missions of Engineer Unit.Company D’s primary mission is to perform as combat engineers, while the secondary mission is to fight as infantry, PSG Carmen said.Four officers — CaDt. Calhoun, of Colquitt; first lieutenants Douglas O. Smith, Warner Robins; Ronald J. Whitfield, Cairo; and James II. Yates, Brinson — commanded 115 enlisted men, during the annual training.Projects assigned to Company D included installing heliport tie-downs, repairing and installing culverts, improving and marking roads, Capt. Calhoun added.'Hie Bainbridge andThomasville based national guardsmen participated in a group review and successfully stood a command inspection, PSG Carmen said, while at Ft. Stewart.Maj. Gen. John M. Finn, deputy commanding general, third U.S. Army, visited Co. D and was briefed on assigned projects.Capt. Calhoun added: “The officers and men of Company D 560th Engineer Battalion departed annual training with a sense of accomplishment anr a feeling of pride in a job well done.”The men loaded their equipment and returned to the Georgia National Guard armories in Bainbridge and here, n o t having an acciuent throughout the entire 15-uay training period^y said.
