Magar Didn't Want Public Medal AwardProved Gallantry, Twice Wounded, Just Had Silver Star Sent to HimT/5 Vernon O. Magar is to receive the Silver Star award in a most unusual manner. As h? was given a choise of locations where the decocation could be made, he requested that the medal be sent to him and further requested that no public ceremony be held.The citation accompanying the medal reads in oart as follows: “Technician Fifth Grade (then! private first class) Vernon O. Magar. Field Artillery. 65th Ar-1 morcd Field Artillery battalion, on July 30. 1944. in France. T/5 Magar. a tank driver, observing his officer wounded by enemy fire in an atteirmt to escape from | an orchard, distinguished himself by outstanding courage in rescuing his officer.Wounded. Kept Going “Without regard for his own personal safety. T/5 Magar left the protection of his tank, in the face of enemy fire and placed the wounded officer on the rear deck of his tank.“Under continued fire. T/5 Magar. though wounded himself, directed the tank to withdraw to a place of safety, while he remained on the deck w ith the of-ficer. giving him what comfort and assistance possible.“Upon rearhip* a safe nosition, he insured that first rid was given the wounded officer before h“ing given treatment himself. A few months later a brother. Buren. entered service and is now a master sergeant stationed on Okinawa. Another brother. Ess cl. Seabee, is in the Philippines and like his brothers entered service in 1944.Cpl. Magar fought in North Africa and transferred was trained invasion. He particioated in the initial landings at Normandy on D-Day.He was slightly wounded at Normandy, but medics took careVERNONof him in such manner that he did not have to report for hospitalization. He was wounded the second time when he went after his wcunded officer.Saw Yanks Meet RussiansWhile participating in the European theater, he went thro Belgium. Holland. Germany and was present when American forces joined the Russians at the Elbe river.Cpl. Magar was a farmer before entering the service, in addition to working in the ofl fields on the side.
