Amateurs all over the country are being urged to take primary courses in the training of Army dogs and these will furnish a steady stream of learners to work under the more experienced handlers.The course of sentry dogs embodies the learning of a brief routine of commands which both American and foreign experience shows will cover most situations. There are four basic orders—“Heel!’’, “Stay!”, “Out!” and “Comer—to be preceded by the name of the particular dog addressed. To give warning of the approach of any person whatsoever, friend or foe, the dog is to come to attention, bark or growl. After learning these commands, the dog must rehearse doing them in the presence of distractions ranging from the presence of chickens or other dogs to actual gunfire. Finally he must learn to perform in complete darkness. Dog-sentry work is exclusively at night, when human guards are most inneed of “amplification*1 of their senses.‘Heel!” is elemental for either peacetime obedience work or sentry duty. The dog must immediately come around in back of the handler and stay as close as possible to his left foot. If the handler pauses and says. “Sit,” the dog must instantly do so. This is taught by putting the dog on a leash and repeating the act over and over again, at first yanking sharply on the leash and pressing the dog's stern down to the ground. Good work is always rewarded with a pat and praise. Poor performance is never punished save with human displeasure. Stoecker always gives a new pupil a dav or two without training, just to'accustom him to the new surroundingsbefore beginning work.For “Come!” he uses a 25-foot rope. After the dog is sharply pulled back a few times on hearing the command, he soon learns to come instantly to the handler.
