Subsequently it was taken over by the quartermaster general. It has agreed to supply 5.000 trained docs for the First Army, and other army units are expected to need at least 20.000 others. The dogs, worth from $50 to $500 each, are contributed by owners, and neither the dogs nor their training costs the government a cent.Moving spirits in Dogs for Defense are Henry Stoecker; his boss, Mrs. Milton Erlanger, owner of the Pillicoc poodle kennels, on which she lavishes a large part of her generous allowance; and Harrv I.IfCaesar, an ascetic-looking investment broker, who breeds springer spaniels on a New Jersey estate close to the Erlanger home.Mrs. Erlanger conceived the idea of sentry dogs for the army a year ago and talked it over with Caesar. Under this command the dog is let off the leash and must search energetically in the direction indicated by the guard. On findirfg an intruder, he must set up an alarm and menacingly keep the culprit from run# ning away. They are trained to a|PI tack and bite only if the quari\! runs away. So. if a military dog gets you at bay, you had better stay there until the human sentry arrives. The careful cultivation of a dog’s natural instinct for suspicion is the basis of training for this command. Men serving as test saboteurs often get some nasty bites. The essential qualities for trainers are good temper and willingness to repeat the lessons endlessly.Sentry duty is only part of an Army dog’s work. Some are trained as Red Cross dogs to locate wounded soldiers on the field of battle and report their find to the nearija first-aid station.The dogs are also used to carrv messages, placed in a pocket of their special harness, and to reestablish broken communicationslines.
