An Old VeteranThe following complimentary notice of our townsman Jolm Emery appeared in Sterling Evening Gazette, Aug 25 1880*The oldest soldier on the grounds this morning waa John Emery, Co. I, G5tli Illinois Infantry. lie is nearly eighty-one years of age and enlisted at the age of flfty-scven. He is a hale, hearty old man, and nothing gives him more pleasure than to meet with the hoys, and talk with them over old times. He served a full term of three years, as a musician, being Fife Major, and on the records it is spread opposite his name that during the whole term of his service he never was sick, never lost a day off duty, and was a soldier among soldiers. As one of his com-rades put it* “he never cried to go home” and that is putting it us strong as it can be made. Comrade Emery has music in his soul, aged as he is, and when he this morning played, “The Girl I Left Behind Me,” it sounded familiar to the ears of many who had heard it played many times at the front. Mr. Emery is now a resident of Galva, Henry county, and never misses a reunion if he can possibly be present.
