killed earlier. Tech Sergeant Michael-son had been previously given a battlefield commission and been transferred to another outfit. Staff Sergeant Lewis was next in line.In the middle of the night we were snaking down over a hog back. Mortar fire came in on us. Poor Elbert Cain took one right at his feet. It was just light enough for me to see him flop up in the air several feet right in front of me.Soon after that, Sgt. Watson caught a piece of shrapnel. It was my turn to lead the squad, what few of us were left. There was Simon, Smith, Sharer, Jackson, and myself. We finally reached the meadow down below. Facing us was a creek. We met with Sgt.Lewis. He announced he was in charge. He gave me a feeling of courage - a little bit, anyway. The creek was up to my shoulders and cold. I don’t know how we made it. And next was a cliff that seemed straight up. Somehow we made that too.Tom Lewis was not just a squad leader. He was part of the cadre that trained us kids from the ASTP. I’m not sure which platoon was which anymore, but he was a staff sergeant. He lead us from there. A day or so later poor James Jackson was hit by a bullet right behind his left ear. He was right beside me and it sounded like an explosion. I can still hear the gasping. What a great person he was. I was ready to quit.Thank you, Tom. You lead us well.Lamburt Shultz 1/395
